The Greek National Node of OPERAS
Συγγραφέας:
Περίληψη:
The OPERAS (Open Scholarly Communication in the European Research Area for Social Sciences and Humanities) operates as a distributed European research infrastructure dedicated to strengthening open scholarly communication in the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). Within this structure, National Nodes act as strategic intermediaries between the European infrastructure and national research communities, ensuring that services, policies, and innovations are meaningfully embedded in local scholarly environments.
The Greek National Node has been established to support the integration of Greek SSH stakeholders into this European ecosystem and to enhance the visibility and practical relevance of OPERAS services at the national level. The National Documentation Centre (EKT), a core member of the OPERAS consortium since the early stages of its development, plays a central role in supporting this effort through its longstanding national mandate in research documentation and Open Access coordination.
The Node focuses on building structured connections among researchers, academic libraries, publishers, research-performing organisations, and policy stakeholders active in SSH. Its objectives include promoting familiarity with OPERAS as a European infrastructure, encouraging the practical uptake of its services, and ensuring that national priorities and perspectives are reflected in the infrastructure’s ongoing evolution.
A core dimension of its work involves introducing OPERAS services—covering areas such as scholarly discovery, publishing support, research analytics, and community engagement—to relevant institutional actors across Greece. Through targeted presentations, workshops, and institutional outreach activities, the Greek Node works to introduce these services to academic libraries, research centres, university departments, and scholarly publishers.
By raising awareness of OPERAS within the Greek SSH community, the National Node contributes directly to the consolidation of Open Access and broader Open Science practices at the national level. In this way, outreach and service promotion function not merely as communication activities, but as concrete mechanisms for advancing structural change in scholarly communication in Greece.
Looking ahead, the Greek National Node plans to implement a structured programme of activities including:
• A series of thematic webinars on Open Access and Open Science, addressing topics such as Diamond Open Access publishing, multilingual scholarly communication, and research assessment reform.
• Dedicated presentations and training sessions showcasing OPERAS services to librarians, early-career researchers, and scholarly editors.
• National stakeholder roundtables to identify barriers and opportunities for service uptake and policy alignment.
• The gradual expansion of the Greek OPERAS consortium through the inclusion of additional universities, research institutes, libraries, and scholarly organisations, thereby strengthening national representation within the infrastructure.
At a structural level, the Greek National Node will pursue the gradual enlargement of its consortium by inviting additional universities, research institutes, libraries, and scholarly organisations to participate. This expansion is envisioned as a means of strengthening national representation within OPERAS while fostering a more cohesive and collaborative SSH communication landscape in Greece.
The proposed poster presents the strategic orientation, ongoing initiatives, and forward-looking plans of the Greek National Node.
